The Dangers of Enabling

Enabling helps the addict to keep drinking, drugging or gambling without experiencing the full consequences of his or her irresponsible and harmful behavior.

Denial, shame and/or fear of disclosure imprison them although, in reality, they hold the key to their recovery and a way of life free of their addiction.

Enabling allows the depressive to stay trapped in a state of despair, helplessness and hopelessness. The individual is often too ill to seek help. He or she will spiral downward into a pit of dysfunction from which there may be no escape without our help.

Left alone, the ending is predictable – loss of health, family, livelihood and license and, all too often, years of torment followed by a premature death.
